This course will cover basic virology principles. Please note that this class will not be specifically focused on the Coronaviruses. Rather, this course aims to provide a groundwork of the basics of virus life cycle (entry to egress), to infection and pathogenesis, to immunity, to therapeutics.
The class should be divided according to the ff and will use easily digestible (yet exciting!) journal articles to spark class discussion.
Class #1: Virus life cycle (including diff families)
Class #2: Infection Basics
Class #3: Host immune response
Class #4: Cool virus topics that students suggest
Class #5: Therapeutics - Vaccines, antiviral and virotherapy

HYPE! Marvel Infinity Wars is right around the corner, and we'll give you a taste of how humanities seminars are run here at Columbia, by discussing hot topics on the MCU. We'll have guests who will join our debates on who's going to die, Cap or Iron Man? Where is the soul stone? Who is the White Wolf?
S572: I <3 Viruses in Splash Fall 2017 (Nov. 04, 2017)
Have you ever wondered how you get cold sores or why they keep returning? Ever been bitten by a mosquito and thought you could have contracted dengue? Or just curious about whether viruses are dead or alive? Then here's the virus crash course for you! We'll be talking a lot about viruses, their reproduction, vaccines, your immunity against them and how you can prevent viral-related pathology.
X573: Marvel Jeopardy! in Splash Fall 2017 (Nov. 04, 2017)
Yay! This is the third semester that the Marvel-series will be taught. This means we've completed a "trilogy" :)
This time, we won't be watching clips or discussing science. We also won't be discussing "ideas" and the abstract morals of the Marvel Universe. This is the real deal. This class is a jeopardy game meant to show-off your Marvel skills.
Scope: from Phase I - Phase III. May include recent releases of Inhumans, Sony-related Marvel movies and Netflix-owned Marvel shows (Daredevil, JJ, Luke Cage and the Immortal Iron Fist, sworn defender of Kun-lun)
*Jeopardy will be done in pre-assigned groups* (8 groups of 5)
Rewards include bragging rights!

This semester, we're going to take a more science-based approach in understanding science concepts in our favorite Marvel movies. This class is part of a three-lecture series on chosen Marvel movies and the science behind them. This class will focus on Ant-Man and how feasible the science is behind Ant-Man's superpowers.
The other classes are: The Strange Science and Marvel Talks, so consider registering for those classes as well.
