Brief Biographical Sketch:

As a transfer student from Miami, I'm still adjusting to New York but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop myself from pouncing on any opportunity to talk about the stuff that interests me. While I am studying Political Science my interests include philosophy, literature, film, history, art, and how they all relate to each other. I am Cuban-American and am an aspiring foreign service officer (fancy for diplomat). I've taught English speaking skills and Civics to immigrants for the International Rescue Committee (IRC). I've traveled to Indonesia, Iceland, and India and hope to broaden my travels to countries that don't start with the letter "I". I'm excited to teach for Columbia's Educational Outreach for the third time this Spring!

X954: Stoicism: the Practical Philosophy in Tides Spring 2021 (Feb. 07, 2021)
We live in a world where we constantly hear negative news, have trouble coping with stress, and are looking for fulfillment in an often empty world. Whether it be mindful meditation, yoga, or seeing a therapist there are so many ways one can help themselves feel centered in the chaos. Stoicism is another ancient tool that anyone can apply to their daily lives. Stoicism is not the cold, apathetic attitude many attribute it to today but the mastery of our mindset. It's about being present and grateful. Learning to grow and embrace the obstacles in front of us rather than crumble under their weight. It's about finding peace in our lives.

X900: Stoicism: the Practical Philosophy in Tides Fall 2020 (Oct. 04, 2020)
Stoicism is not like other philosophies. It’s practitioners throughout history range from powerful emperors to playwrights and slaves, not just academics. It focuses on how to live a virtuous and content life, not on abstract ideas of the world. It’s texts are easy to read, unlike most from philosophers. Stoicism is designed to simplify your life, not convolute it. In this course we’ll be learning from the Stoics, ancient and modern, about what it means to live a virtuous life, how to separate what we can and can’t control, and how to turn life's obstacles into opportunities. We'll explore daily practices as well as comparisons to other philosophies and religions. The course will be founded on practicality and each student will finish the program with the tools to cultivate a Stoic mindset to thrive in our uncertain world.
